Motorized Rickshaws - Wooden Sculptures
This collection celebrates the spirited world of indigenous motorized rickshaws—vehicles that hum with character, ingenuity, and cultural identity. Each sculpture is assembled from over 150 precisely laser-cut wooden components, then stained and polished to reveal the natural grain of the MDF, giving the pieces a warm, tactile presence. Crafted in the distinct Barsplit style, the structures remain visually open and airy, allowing viewers to see through the forms as if glimpsing their mechanical soul.
Across different regions, motorized rickshaws have evolved in wonderfully inventive ways. In Cambodia, the Remork—a carriage pulled by a motorcycle or scooter—offers a relaxed, open-air ride, affectionately called a “TukTuk” by travelers. Peru’s Moto-Taxi blends a motorcycle with a three-wheeled frame to create a hardy; compact vehicle perfectly suited to busy urban streets. In the Philippines, the ever-reliable Tricycle pairs a motorbike with a side-mounted passenger cabin, forming one of the country’s most iconic modes of local transport.
These sculptures pay homage to that diversity—not just in form, but in the stories each design carries. Through layered wood, open construction, and detailed craftsmanship, the sculptures capture the resourcefulness and regional flair behind these everyday machines.
